Who is eligible to stay at Family House?
Patients and family members who seek treatment for a life threatening or critical illness.
Do I need a caregiver?
Yes, all patients staying at Family House must have a cargiver who is a person 18 years or older. This person is solely responsible for the patient with whom they are staying. They must stay the entire length of the patient’s visit. They must be emotionally and physically able to care for the patient and themselves and be able to assist in possible decision making. Multiple caregivers are permitted as long as there is not a lapse in patient support.
How long can we stay at Family House?
Providing your visit is medically related and the Pittsburgh-based physician in charge of your care requires that you stay, you are welcome to remain at Family House until it is safe to leave the hospital area. Family House reserves the right to qualify/question your need to stay.
How do we get to Family House?
Family House McKee, Family House Neville, Family House Shadyside and Family House University Place are all located in close proximity to the medical centers in the Oakland and Shadyside neighborhoods of Pittsburgh. After receiving your assigned guest room (by placing your confirmation call on your scheduled date of arrival), our housing representative will refer you to that specific Family House location for directions.
What should we bring?
Bring any personal items that you will need and be prepared to plan for your meals. A fully equipped community kitchen is available for your meal preparations. Family House will provide all bed and bath linens.
Is Family House close to the hospitals?
All Family House locations are convenient to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centers (UPMC-Shadyside, UPMC-Presbyterian and UPMC-Montefiore), Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, Magee Women’s Hospital, the Hillman Cancer Center, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, Veterans Hospital, and the Western Pennsylvania Hospital.
Is there transportation to and from the hospitals?
Courtesy shuttles provided by the UPMC Hospital System operate regularly throughout the day and evening. When you arrive at Family House a staff member or volunteer will give you a complete shuttle schedule.

What is your smoking policy?
All Family House locations are smoke-free facilities.
Can I bring my pet?
Except for certified service dogs, Family House does not allow pets in our houses. If you will be accompanied by a certified service dog, please notify our housing office when you are making your room request.
Where do we park?
Each house has a limited amount of free parking. We suggest you park in one of the hospital parking lots. We have UPMC Hospital reduced-rate parking stickers for UPMC patients .
Are laundry facilities available?
Coin operated laundry rooms are available 24 hours a day at each Family House location.
Is there a safe at the facility?
Family House does not have a safe for guests. Any valuables brought to Family House must stay with you at all times. Family House is not responsible for any valuables left on our premises.
Will we have computer access?
Family House guests have access to computer labs daily between 8 am and 10:00 pm. Wireless internet access is also available.
What are your daily guest fees?
Single room is $40 per day. Double room is $50 per day. Suite is $60-$75 per day. Apartment is $90-$115 per day.
McKee offers single and double rooms and suites.
Neville offers single and double rooms and 1 apartment.
Shadyside offers Suites and 2 apartments.
University Place offers double rooms and suites.
What time is check-in and check-out?
Guests must check in between 1:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on their day of arrival. Check-out is by 12:00 noon.
Does Family House provide medical services?
Family House does not provide medical assistance or home care services. Every patient must be accompanied by a caregiver, during their entire stay, to be eligible to stay at Family House. The caregiver must be a person age 18 or over.
How do we pay for our stay?
Family House accepts Cash, Check, Mastercard, Visa and Discover Card.
