Who is eligible to stay at Family House?
Patients and family members traveling 60 miles or more to receive treatment for a life threatening or critical illness. Patients who wish to stay must have a caregiver stay with them in the room at all times.

How long can we stay at Family House?
Providing your visit is medically related and the Pittsburgh-based physician in charge of your care requires that you stay, you are welcome to remain at Family House until it is safe to leave the hospital area. Family House reserves the right to qualify/question your need to stay.

How do we get to Family House?
Family House McKee, Family House Neville, and Family House Shadyside are all located in close proximity to the medical centers in the Oakland and Shadyside neighborhoods of Pittsburgh. After receiving your assigned guest room (by placing your confirmation call on your scheduled date of arrival), our housing representative will refer you to that specific Family House location for directions. Our website www.familyhouse.org also includes directions for each Family House.


What should we bring?
Bring any personal items that you will need and be prepared to plan for your meals. A fully equipped community kitchen is available for your meal preparations. Family House policy requires that all food and beverages be kept and consumed within the Family House Kitchen and Dining room areas only. Family House will provide all bed and bath linens.


Is Family House close to the hospitals?
All Family House locations are convenient to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centers (UPMC-Shadyside, UPMC-Presbyterian and UPMC-Montefiore), Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, Magee Women’s Hospital, the Hillman Cancer Center, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, Veterans Hospital, and the Western Pennsylvania Hospital.


Is there transportation to and from the hospitals?
Courtesy shuttles provided by the UPMC Hospital System and the Western Pennsylvania Hospital operate regularly throughout the day and evening. When you arrive at Family House a staff member or volunteer will give you a complete shuttle schedule.

What is your smoking policy?
All Family House Residences are smoke-free facilities.

Where do we park?
Each house has a limited amount of free parking. We suggest you park in one of the hospital parking lots. We have coupons for UPMC Hospital reduced rate parking.

Are laundry facilities available?
Coin operated laundry rooms are available 24 hours a day at each Family House location.

Is there a safe at the facility?
Family House does not have a safe for guests. Any valubles brought to Family House must stay with you at all times. Family House is not responsiible for any valubles left on our premises.

Will we have computer access?
Family House guests have access to computer labs daily between 8 am and 10:00 pm. Internet access is available.

What are your daily guest fees?
Single room is $30.00 per day. Double room is $40.00 per day. Suite is $50.00 per day.

What time is check-in and check-out?
Guests must check in between 1:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on their day of arrival. Check-out is by 12:00 noon.

Does Family House provide medical services?
Family House does not provide medical assistance or home care services. Every patient must be accompanied by a caregiver, during their entire stay, to be eligible to stay at Family House. The caregiver must be a person age 18 or over.
