In its 25-year history, Family House has endeavored to grow to meet the need for affordable housing for patients and their families. In 1989, Family House established a second permanent location – Family House Neville. Between 1991 and 2001, Family House established a temporary third location – first in the Nese-Barkan building and later in Montefiore Hospital. In 2001, Family House Shadyside opened as the third permanent location. Even with a total of 115 rooms between our three locations, the need for continues to grow to such an extent that, on an average day, we are forced to turn away approximately 30 eligible families due to lack of space. These families either postpone their medical treatment, chose another medical center destination, stay in a local hotel if they can afford it, or sleep in a hospital waiting room or parking garage. At present, Family House is only able to accommodate 47% of the qualified requests.
In response to this growing need and to the anticipated growth in local transplant, cancer and neurology programs, Family House has entered into a long-term agreement with the University of Pittsburgh to renovate and lease four floors of the former University Club facility at 123 University Place in Oakland. The University of Pittsburgh will operate the remaining floors separately as a day conference center. The Family House facility, which will provide an additional 45 guest rooms will be known as Family House University Place. The construction costs that must be paid by Family House are projected to be approximately $4.5 million. Family House’s Board of Directors is committing $500,000 of accumulated investment funds toward the building renovation costs for Family House University Place. In order to complete the renovation, Family House must raise $4.0 million from its community, foundation and corporate supporters. The establishment of Family House University Place will enable Family House to accommodate 70 – 75% of those in need of affordable, temporary housing as they seek critical medical care in Pittsburgh.
The establishment of the fourth Family House will increase the number of available Family House rooms by approximately 40% and, as a result, we will see a corresponding need to increase distributions from the Family Assistance Fund. Because of the location of Family House University Place (close to the Starzl Transplant Institute), it will likely house a large number of transplant patients and families. These families generally have larger than average Family Assistance needs because they tend to be longer term guests. Along with the need to raise $4.0 million to establish Family House University Place, we have an urgent need to raise an additional $500,000 to increase the capacity of the Family Assistance Fund. Therefore, Family House is conducting a capital campaign to raise $4.5 million toward the renovation and additional Family Assistance expense of Family House University Place.
